Camping is one of the most rewarding and pleasurable vacation trips one can take. But how often is the perfect camping trip impaired by bad sleeping experiences? Campers often wake up to back, shoulder or neck pain, caused by sleeping on hard ground. Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our health and well being. Healthy adults should generally get between seven and eight hours of sleep. - Choose your campsite carefully. If you are at a drive-in campground and want to get some sleep, don’t choose a campsite in an area designated for radios and boom boxes, and don’t pick one near the bathrooms, which can be a high traffic area. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to bring ear plugs.
- Give some thought to where you pitch your tent. Aim for a flat location. Make sure the surface is as smooth as possible, with no large rocks to poke you. If you have to pitch your tent on a slight slope, you will want your head to be at the highest point so you that don’t find yourself rolling or sliding. If possible, pitch the tent over soft grass or pine needles.
- Before you go to sleep, make sure your food is properly stored. You don’t want to lie awake worrying about animals being attracted by your food.
- Use a good sleeping pad, one that will give you some cushioning from the hard ground. Even in the heat of the summer, the ground can be cool; a pad will give some insulation. Air mattresses are a popular choice if you are driving to a campground, but beware of leaky or soft air mattresses.
- Take a sleeping bag that is suited to the climate you are camping in. You don’t want to be too cold or too hot.
- Use a camping pillow that is comfortable but gives good head support.
How to Choose a Camping Pillow
Choose a pillow that is firmer than a regular sleeping pillow, as the hard ground doesn’t give way like a mattress, and you don’t want your shoulder or neck to be constricted. Look for a camping pillow that is lightweight and made specifically for traveling. Ideally, it should compress for packing, but not lose its form. Camping pillows can get a lot of wear and tear, so one that is machine washable is an asset.
